Hello , It's been another turbulent week for financial news. Last week we heard that the Bank of England has put up their Base Rate to 3% which means that borrowing in any form is more expensive for the rest of us. I've had a load of questions on TV and radio from people wondering what to do with their mortgage particularly - should they fix or should they wait - and it's a tough one to answer. On the one hand the BoE, and other central banks, are indicating that they will continue to put rates up. On the other hand, if we do find ourselves in a recession, and a deep one at that, it's likely that they will be very tempted to bring rates down again so
that more money is pumped through the economy to revive it. |

So, if you're wondering right now what to do, I would have a chat with two or even three mortgage brokers (they're free to chat to) to see what they think. You might get very different answers but at least you'll find out what those on the coal-face are thinking. If you don't have your own broker, take a look at Unbiased which has financial advisors and mortgage brokers near you. Worth a go. Also this week we're showing you where you can get free Nero coffee and free burgers, how to make money from your lazy old driveway and how you can save
a full £70 a month on your food bills. And - mentioning the 'C' word - we have a suggestion for a good Christmas present for the kids: a Junior ISA. How glamorous...not! But trust me, they will thank you for it later on :-) Keep your comments and ideas coming, too, as we love to hear from you and we're always interested in your questions. If you have a burning money question, send it to editorial@moneymagpie.com and we will get it answered one way or another! Love Jasmine

Vegan and on a Budget?
|
With an increase in popularity of veganism, comes an increase in costs. Sadly, many brands will aim to capitalise from dietary requirements and choices they deem ‘trendy’. With vegan alternatives still being less readily available than non-vegan options, large corporations try to monopolise the market, charging extortionate amounts for basics. This is where we come in. It’s World Vegan Month this month. No matter what your reasons are for going
vegan, you shouldn’t have to pay more on your weekly shop. Here’s how to ace veganism on a budget.

INTEREST RATE RISE OF 0.75% ANNOUNCED
|
The Bank of England has announced the largest increase to interest rates since 1989. The cost of borrowing has reached 3%, a total rise of 0.75 percentage points. This comes after predictions that higher interest rates would push the country into the longest recession since the 1930s.

What to do if you can't pay your bills?
|
What happens if you can’t pay your household bills? We recently posted an article about the Don’t Pay Campaign. Jasmine Birtles advised that customers should be wary of the consequences of not paying bills as it can seriously damage your credit rating. Companies can pass your debt onto debt collection agencies, which can be really unpleasant. So what can you do? What happens if you can’t cover your rent, your energy bills or your council tax?
We round up your options below.
