A personal message from Jasmine

Hi ,

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM JASMINE

Wasn't 2011 an interesting year?!

A time of revolutions, toppling of governments, royal weddings and yet more economic uncertainty. It looks like 2012 could throw even more at us!

I've been on quite a few programmes recently where I've been asked how we're going to be affected by the Euro and our refusal to sign the Treaty. My answer is - I don't know. I really don't. And I haven't heard from anyone else who does.

What I can tell you is that there will be times in the next year when we will wish we had closer ties to the Euro and times (probably more of these) when we are very grateful we don't.

We might get a bit of an uplift from the Olympics - more from national pride than actual hard cash - but otherwise our economy is going to continue to struggle this year.

This is a time of uncertainty, not just here but across the globe too. Human beings don't like uncertainty. Markets, which are run by human beings, really don't like uncertainty so we can expect them to make massive leaps up and down at different points in the year.

Yes, I think we're looking at another bumpy ride.

My advice is to hold on to the sides, look straight ahead, and remember that this will not last for ever.

The late, very great, poet, playwright and leader of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel (one of my heroes), once said, "Life cannot be destroyed for good, neither...can history be brought entirely to a halt".

So however rocky and uncertain this year is (and even the year after), remind yourself that it's not forever. We're not at the end of the world, however much Hollywood might like us to think we are. It's a period of change, fundamental change, in the way we live, spend, consume and invest. What is ending is an old way of thinking and living. It's up to us to make the new way a healthier and happier way, even if it's not an easier way.

Remember, too, we Brits are like teabags. It's only when we're in hot water that that our real strength shows!

This year and the years following will give us a good opportunity to show our real strength and really grow. It will also be a good opportunity to learn what real happiness is and to find it (check out my research on this subject in my blog here).

So what can you do now, practically, to make a difference to your money?
Firstly, if you know you have overspent this Christmas (yes, most of us do) and you're already worried about the nasty credit card bill that will drop through your door in a few weeks, then apply now for a 0% credit card.

I know I've said it before but it really is a good way to manage your debts and avoid losing money in interest payments to the banks! With a 0% interest card, by the time the bill has to be paid you will be able to transfer the money over and pay it off cheaper and quicker.

There are some really good deals around at the moment but not everyone can get them. Only those with squeaky-clean credit ratings will be considered so check yours here for free before you apply.

If yours is good, go for the Barclaycard Platinum card. It has the longest 0% period at 22 months.
