Hello ,
Do you feel like everything is moving so fast you can't keep up?
Every day it seems there's a new app, a new gizmo...even a new philosophy for living.
You try to get ahead of things but there always seems to be a few people who have got there before you. How did they know about it all before
you??
Then you find the thing you were trying to catch up on is already out of date and these clever people are on to the new thing now!
I know the feeling - I work in IT and media and yet I'm regularly astonished at the pace of change. It's hard not to give in to panic sometimes.
Is there an answer?
There must be mustn't there?
And I don't think it's to do with keeping up with all the latest tech and lifestyle news every moment.
The fundamentals of life don't change. People, and what they need in life, don't really change.
Gadgets and even cool-sounding life philosophies never really meet the very deep human need for unconditional love, a sense of self-worth and belonging.
Let's
get a balance
It's not that I'm anti-technology. Some of it's good and useful and it keeps us all young to be open to new ideas.
But, as with spending money, taking on new ideas and new gadgets needs to be done on your terms, at your pace and for your own good reasons. Not just for FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) which is what psychologists say currently plagues the youth of today...and the more mature!
Time to get
quieter
The Easter holidays are a good time to clear out physical and mental junk.
You can spend this time to do a
financial Spring Clean and also take a quiet few hours to think about what's important to you.
So these are my 'Spring Resolutions' (yes the New Year ones have
already disappeared into the mists of time!)
1.
Watch a LOT less TV. Seriously,
even though I work in it, I know I have to be strong and stop switching on NCIS or Big Bang Theory, or *shameface* Murder
She Wrote (don't judge me) as an entertaining backdrop when I get home. It sucks my energy and can even make me unhappy (including the comedy stuff). Not worth it!
2. Take a breath more often. I kind of like the idea of the slow movement and I think it's a great antidote to the whole 'there's an app for that' culture (although I bet there is an app for slow living). But I can't quite be bothered with some of
the hippy dippy elements of it. Still, there's a lot to be said for just pausing a bit more before speaking or doing; for taking time to 'smell the flowers' and considering a bit more rather than acting immediately.
3. Party more! Well, at least spend more fun time with friends and family. Not all parties are fun, some can be actively depressing, but getting together with good people...that's one of the best things
ever.
4.
Love more...particularly where I feel it is not deserved. One of the things I've learned (and keep learning) is that that the 'unconditional love, a sense of self-worth and belonging' only really come along in this way. There has been quite a lot written about this in the past - like
this wonderful piece by Henry Drummond in 1880 - but not so much recently.
