Jasmine's New Year Message

Hi ,

Would you like to have a happier year this year with more light and genuine good?

Of course you would - who wouldn’t?

Well, I’ve got a few suggestions today that could help with that.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to burden you with another load of New Year’s resolutions that everyone else has suggested in the last few days.

This week I’m suggesting 7 things you could do at least once this year…any time in the year...to have happier and more fulfilling days.
Jasmine
1. Write down a list of things you’re proud of. These can be small or large but make sure you do a good list and keep adding to it over a few days. Put in things that you thought you couldn’t do but you have. Put down things you have learnt, things you have completed and things you have overcome.  Go on, surprise yourself with the good things you have done over the last few years. Now build on that and any time you think you’re useless or a failure, take a look at that list and be grateful.

2. Free yourself of clutter. OK, this might not be something you can do just once…certainly not with all your possessions…but you could at least aim to declutter one room this year…maybe one a month so you will be clutter-free by the summer. It’s not just about throwing possessions either, it’s also your email inbox and your contacts list on your phone. Get rid of everything you don’t need, anything that makes you feel burdened or down. This is why I’ve set up National Clear Your Clutter Day on Saturday 19th March. It's to help us all get some freedom, recycle items for others to enjoy and even make some money along the way. Take a look at what we’re doing and follow the project on social media [TwitterFacebook]. As Socrates said, “ To need nothing is divine, and the less a man needs, the nearer he approaches divinity.” Part of ‘divinity’ is freedom and joy - who wouldn’t want that?

3. Find one way to streamline a bit of daily life. Much of our life is about habits so just setting up a good one here and there can make things easier without much effort. It could be getting into the habit of making the bed as soon as you are out of it every morning or filing papers and bills when you get them rather than letting them pile up. It doesn’t have to be big, just pick one and do it.

4. Enjoy a journey. Go on a trip - even if it's somewhere quite close - where the travel part of it is just as enjoyable as the destination. It could be a car journey with the kids where you play games all the way through, or a train journey with good views, or a cycle ride. Just enjoy. Don’t count the minutes.

5. Think about what you feel you lack and give it out. Maybe you would like more and better companionship, or you need more support or you’re just never understood. Whatever it is, think about how you can give that very thing to others and then do it. It will come back to you, ‘pressed down and running over’. What we feel we lack from others is often what we’re not giving enough of ourselves.

6. Do something surprising and generous for someone. Give them a surprise present that you know they really want but can’t afford,  take them on a trip to a place they’ve always wanted to go to. Something that would make their year complete, to know that somebody cared enough about them to do something at that level. Next time you’re out shopping, buy something for somebody who really needs it.  Phone someone you lost touch with somehow. Have a proper catch up and find out more about them.

You can even help out people you haven't met yet by using a site like TrustedHousesitters. This gives you the opportunity to look after people's pets and homes while they are away. In return you get to make a new furry friend and spend time somewhere different, maybe even abroad - it's like a little holiday.

To become a home sitter or to find one, sign-up to TrustedHousesitters here. And right now's the perfect time to join as until 11th January, you can get a 25% discount on your membership by using the code NEWYEAR25 when signing up.

7. Be quiet. Many of us spend no time at all in silence and, particularly, mental quiet apart from when we are asleep (and often not even then). Make a conscious effort to be quiet for at least 10 minutes a day. Find quiet spaces where you live and where you work. Turn off the music, the phones and social media. Be still.

My ongoing resolution - which didn’t just start on 1st Jan - is to have more life and fewer weights holding me down. Try it with me!

Love,
Jasmine
